This week has been full of emotions, silliness, worry, and information. So, here are just a few things I learned this week.
1. Cate does in fact have a speech delay and will be getting speech therapy beginning in a couple of weeks. However, they don't think that she will have much difficulty with it. Cognitively, she is very bright and her receptive language is very high. She currently has 11 words and we have set the goal of 70 words in the next 6 months. The evaluation team felt that this is a realistic goal.
2. Max now has a "girlfriend" and had his first kiss from her this past week at school (but that is another post). This young love all came about after this happened last week.
3. Going to the bookstore CAN actually be fun with the kids. I don't usually bring them with me since I don't want them being loud, causing a scene, or grabbing at everything. We had gift cards for them from Christmas, so we went and they each got to pick out some books. It was very orderly and then we sat in the storytime area and they looked at them quietly for a bit. It was a lot of fun!
4. Cate actually can bathe herself! When asked during the evaluation if she could do certain self-help tasks (ie, bathe herself)...I said that I didn't know! Sure enough, we asked her tonight and she did a pretty darn good job! Maybe there are other things that we have been doing for her that she can actually do!!!
5. The next cast of celebrities for Dancing with the Stars!!!! I LOVE this show. So, my picks, before the season has even started, are Shawn Johnson and David Alan Grier. I am not saying they'll win, but I think David Alan Grier is HIL.AR.I.OUS! And, Shawn Johnson is just so cute and spunky!

First kiss? Can't wait to read about that post. Are you ok?
Cate is a bright little girl. Kids are amazing and learn so much so quickly. I'm sure she'll soon be talking up a storm in no time.
It's awesome that you are clued in on what to look for with speech delays. Otherwise you may never have realized that Cate had a bit of one and she wouldn't have gotten the benefit of early therapy. Thanks to my experiences with Cass I spotted a delay in Jayce and he's been in speech since he turned two. When he started he had 0 words. Zero. Now, he won't stop talking. I couldn't believe how successful the therapy was, right from the get-go. Hopefully Cate's will be the same!
OMG bathing themselves is a WONDERFUL treat for mom! One less duty. Just watch for hair that doesn't get all the shampoo rinsed out.can I say BRUSH NIGHTMARE!
Did you have someone come to the house to evaluate the kids? Trevor will be 2 next month & he doesn't say much at all. He understands a lot, but doesn't use but a couple of words.
Very interesting post. I never would think to let Trevor try to bathe himself either.
Thanks for sharing!
Cate sounds delightful! Could she teach my husband to do baths too?
I came across your blog from The Mother Letters Project blog. I know this is silly...but my daughter is in the Leelou Blogs cute baby photo contest and I am trying to spread the word for people to vote for her!! I need HUNDREDS of votes for her to even come close to catching up to the front-runners. I have been trying to figure out where to find hundreds of people, and I didn't think it was approriate to ask Seth to post something so silly on The Mother Letters Blog (obviously), but I figured maybe all the people who helped with the project would be willing to go give my little Makenzie from AZ a vote : ) If not, that's ok too. I am just trying to get creative and reach more people! If you'd like to help me by voting for Makenzie, please go to http://www.leeloublogs.blogspot.com/ and spread the word for others to vote as well : )
EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY THOUGH...I am also recruiting prayer warriors for a tiny little miracle baby named Kayleigh Freeman, maybe you've heard of her and are already praying for her. It was through her blog that I heard about the contest in the first place. Even if you don't take the time to vote for Makenzie, please take a minute to visit HER website: http://www.kayleighannefreeman.blogspot.com/ and say a prayer for this sweet girl!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!!!
Sincerely,
Daniele Brown
PS- THE MOTHER LETTERS PROJECT is in NO WAY associated with this request other than the fact that I found your blog there!!
Great post of "learning"!
Sometimes you don't know what kids can do for themselves because you haven't thought to let them try!
Good luck with the speech therapy. It sounds like she will be talking your ears off very soon!
wow, that's a lot to learn in one week!
OOOOH! When does DWTS start? I can't wait!
