This year marks the 40th anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which was published in 1969. On March 20th, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day,” schools, libraries and bookstores will be hosting events and activities to mark this special occasion. Additional celebrations and activities based on this much-loved book will be held throughout the year in schools and libraries and by readers and friends all around the world. Also in March, a special edition of the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar Pop-Up Book featuring Eric Carle’s illustrations in a 3-dimensional format, will be available for sale at your local bookstore.

My kids have both loved this book since a very early age. It is a great tool for teaching counting, days of the week, and the science of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly! Max knows this book by heart and as you may have seen yesterday, he "read" it to Cate for the first time!
So, go out and celebrate this wonderful author and beautiful illustrator and check out or buy his amazing books.
I hope you enjoyed this Literacy Thursday hosted by Jennifer @ if you're happy and you know it. For more great children's book ideas, click the button below.

As you know I love this book-- not only for the fun story and the pretty pics but speaking from a teacher's point of view- it teaches colors, numbers, sequence, metamorphasis, and the lesson that you can change your circumstances and do something to fix your problem. Love you and so glad you all are here. mom
Ah, now I see why you wanted to post last week. SO sorry I didn't give a heads up. Love this book too! It's the first one that I remember my Mom reading to me. Good pick!
