New Words

This past week was Cate's first session with the speech therapist. She was very optimistic that Cate's language will progress very quickly once she really gets a few more words under her belt.

When we had her evaluated she only had about 12 words (more than Max's five words at this age) - Mama, Dadad, yes, up, dog, quack, duck, wow, yeah, whassa (her version of what's that), this, and choo choo. Children her age tend to have around 50-75 and are forming 1 to 2 word sentences or phrases.

However, the day before the session she said her first 2 word phrase - "I do"! She even showed off during therapy and said 2 new words - "help" and "no". Then, as if this wasn't great progress...at Max's soccer game, she shouted "go, go" at his team! Maybe she'll say Mickey before we head to Florida. That would be a little dream come true for this Disney mom! {grin}

I am truly overjoyed and excited to see how quickly she progresses now. As a mom who has had two children with speech delays, I try not to take for granted those times when they won't stop talking! I know that it can be annoying for some parents, but I really try to cherish those moments as much as I can!

Yeah, Cate!!!!!

My oldest son had a speech delay as a toddler, but as a 12 year old you would you never tell. There are still days I have to remind him to slow down so we can understand him, but he hardly ever stops talking now.

Way to go on all the new words!

That's awesome. You must be thrilled with the progress she's making. My fingers are crossed for "Mickey."

Hooray for Cate! Kids pick up so quickly. That would be a great moment to capture - her saying Mickey or even mouse at Disney.

I thought my youngest was going to need some help in this area too, but my pediatrician kept telling me things were fine...he was right she won't stop talking now and all the things I was worried about disappeared! I am so glad it is working out great for you guys to get the therapy, I had a friend who did and also noted great improvement really fast.

That's awesome how quickly she's picking things up! I haven't counted how many words Trevor can say, but he has a tendency to say a word once & then never say it again.

I know what you mean about cherishing every word. I can't wait until he says "I love you." That will melt my heart. Thanks again for the advice!

By the way, I have an award for you on my blog.

Good for her - sounds like she's progressing quickly already. There's nothing quite as sweet as those few hundred words.

GO GO CATE!!

my son was speaking full articulate sentences at 14 months. i took my daughter in to be evaluated at 2 because she wasnt speaking as well at he did at that age. the speech therapist rolled her eyes at me after evaluating my daughter and said she was fine and that my son was the freak for speaking like that at his age. i can laugh about it now, but i was so offended at the time.
